By that I mean considering building something from the ground up that would be fast (but not overly done with js) while this phpbb site is built up.

I set new user registration to require admin activation, as we were getting tons of reg attempts by trolls from SECRant. I'll review them as quickly as I can and only activate those coming from IPs that are not VPN/etc.

Sounds great! I'd love to get a real website going for the forum. I used to do web dev many many moons ago, but I'm quite rusty.

Awesome. In a way, them doing that will help you harden this site a bit.

Maybe allow users to write articles and send them to the admin for potential posts. I've always wanted to be a sports columnist and could give myself and others the experience.

I like it! Once we have the rest of the website setup I'd definitely be open to this.
